Commissioned by the National Biodiversity Data Centre, this comprehensive handbook forms part of Ireland’s Butterfly Series, offering evidence-based guidance on transforming gardens into thriving habitats for butterflies and wider biodiversity.
The design approach balanced scientific accuracy with accessible visual communication, making complex ecological information engaging for gardeners of all experience levels. Careful attention was paid to information hierarchy and navigation, enabling readers to easily reference specific topics—from selecting caterpillar foodplants to managing invasive species. The clean, organised layout supports the handbook’s function as a practical ‘menu’ of options that gardeners can adapt to their own spaces, whether large gardens, small patios, or rented properties.
Bespoke Vector Illustrations
Central to the project were bespoke vector illustrations created in-house, depicting butterfly life cycles, native plant species, and habitat management techniques. These custom illustrations ensured visual consistency throughout the handbook while providing clear, scalable graphics that work across both print and digital formats.
The handbook addresses timely environmental challenges, including climate change impacts on butterfly populations, the importance of peat-free composting, and creating wildlife corridors through proper hedgerow management. By presenting actionable advice alongside compelling visuals, the design helps empower individuals to contribute meaningfully to Ireland’s biodiversity conservation efforts.
