Farming for Soil Health Handbook


The Farming for Soil Health Handbook provides evidence-based guidance on best practices for managing Irish agricultural soils, supporting farmers, growers, and advisors in building long-term soil health and resilience.

The design approach balanced scientific rigour with practical accessibility, translating complex soil science into clear, actionable information for the farming community. The handbook is structured around six core principles of good soil management—from knowing your soils to maintaining balanced fertility—each supported by detailed explanations, checklists, and visual references.

Farming for Soil Health HandbookCentral to the project were custom infographics created in-house, illustrating key concepts such as the soil food web, soil health indicators, soil classification across Ireland, and the relationships between physical, chemical, and biological soil properties. These bespoke visualisations break down intricate ecological processes into digestible graphics, enabling farmers to quickly grasp concepts like nutrient cycling, compaction diagnosis, and organic matter dynamics. The infographics were designed to function both as standalone reference tools and as integrated elements within the broader layout, ensuring consistency and clarity throughout.

Careful attention was paid to information hierarchy and navigation, with clear visual signposting enabling readers to locate specific principles, diagnostic tools, and management recommendations efficiently. The clean, organised layout supports the handbook’s function as a practical field reference that can be consulted repeatedly throughout the farming year.

The handbook acknowledges the critical role farmers play as custodians of Ireland’s soils, presenting soil health as both an agricultural imperative and a societal legacy. By combining robust scientific content with thoughtful graphic design, this project demonstrates how visual communication can empower land managers to make informed decisions that benefit productivity, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience.
