A collaborative educational project between The Heritage Council, ourselves and Cartoon Saloon, the Puffin Rock Wildlife Activity Book Design project was initiated for young children and families to explore, enjoy, and help protect Ireland’s unique biodiversity.
The graphic design approach centred on a carefully considered visual language tailored specifically for a young audience. Every element—from typography to layout—was crafted to be engaging, accessible, and age-appropriate, ensuring that children could navigate the activities with confidence and enthusiasm.
Consistency and Clarity
Maintaining consistency with the beloved animated TV series was paramount. The booklet’s look and feel seamlessly echoes the distinctive aesthetic of Puffin Rock, allowing children to instantly connect with familiar characters Oona and Baba while embarking on their nature exploration journey. This visual continuity strengthens recognition and contributes to a cohesive experience across print, web and TV.
The project represents a successful creative partnership between ourselves, the talented illustrators at Cartoon Saloon and author Juanita Browne. This collaboration brought together expert storytelling, charming illustration and clear, concise layout design, resulting in an activity book filled with games, puzzles, and outdoor activities that help to make learning about Ireland’s wildlife both fun and memorable.
Available in both Irish and English, the booklet supports The Heritage Council’s mission to promote greater awareness of Ireland’s nature and biodiversity among families, extending the Puffin Rock universe beyond the screen and into the hands of young explorers across the country.
