Our brief for the travel magazine design of TravelBug Cruising was to strike a balance between elegance, clarity, and brand coherence, delivering a polished yet approachable publication aligning with the magazine’s role as a “one-stop primer” for cruising enthusiasts.
From the outset, the layout was structured for legibility and visual flow. We used generous margins and a clean grid system, giving the content “room to breathe” and helping avoid visual clutter. Typography was restrained and purposeful: the body text is clean and readable, while headings and subheads have a clear and logical hierarchy (size, weight, and colour changes) to guide the eye through long-form features and highlight key takeaways.
Full-bleed photographic spreads evoke the sense of place and journey intrinsic to cruising, while smaller supporting photos are paired with ample white space and caption treatments. This mix allows for both immersion and digestibility. In particular, double-page spreads become visual anchors within the issue, creating moments of pause and attraction.
Colour-wise, the palette is elegant and established, often leaning into ocean blues, crisp neutrals, and accent tones that echo maritime or travel motifs. These hues reinforce the cruise theme without overwhelming the editorial content. Sidebar panels, or “factoid boxes”, are consistently styled to maintain cohesion across all brand partner spreads, which helps the editorial pages and advertorials feel integrated.
While the magazine is primarily designed for digital distribution, the artwork is fully print-ready. Interactive functionality is also built in, with hyperlinked content throughout.
